Congratulations Abubaker and Zaakiyah

The WACS Global Chef Challenge is the largest individual culinary competition in the world. The competition not only presents a great opportunity for culinary specialists to put their cooking skills and knowledge to test, but also gives them the chance to win an honour for their country.

The Africa and Middle East semi-finals of both the WACS Global Chef and the Hans Bueschkens competitions were held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from November 21st to 23rd 2011 and were organised by the Emirates Culinary Guild.

Abubaker Bagaria was the official South African entrant and obtained second place in the WACS Global Chefs Challenge, missing first place by only 1 point. Zaakiyah Patel a first year student at HTA School of Culinary Art in Randburg, assisted Abu as his Commis Chef.

Abu and Zaakiya stayed on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and had the privilege to attend formula 1 racing, and the Ferrari World Theme Park at the Yas Marina circuit, visit the Viceroy Hotel and the Marina Mall. "This was such a privilege to represent South Africa at one of the largest and most well organised competitions. The great thing about large Competitions like this one is that you realize how passionate we as chefs are."

"It is very difficult to compete in another country as resources and sponsorship is very limited. But I would like to thank Phakamisa Trading, SACA, Chef David Harnois, sous Chef Sanjiwa as well as Mr Phillips at the Grand and all sponsors - without your help and assistance this wonderful experience would not have been possible" says Abubaker Bagaria.

Zaakiyah competed in the Hans Bueschkens Young Chefs Challenge and also took second place in this prestigious culinary competition.

On behalf of the South African Chefs Association, Board, President and Office very well done to both Abubaker and Zaakiyah. This is a phenomenal achievement. These two chefs did the Association and South Africa very proud.
