President Zuma once announced that 500 000 jobs opportunities will be created in South Africa, the sad news however is that government cannot achieve this alone. In order for this to become a reality, government is reliant on small business owners such as caterers to help build the economy by employing others and developing and consolidating their own businesses.
The Enterprise Development partnership between Tiger Brands and the Centre for Culinary Excellence is a project that is intended to build cooking and catering skills among black-owned catering companies and chefs. The end goal of the program is to improve the abilities of entrepreneurs within the industry, to enhance their career opportunities, improve their quality of life and ultimately create sustainable businesses in the culinary industry.
The programme entails the training of entrepreneurs in practical cooking skills that provides entrepreneurs with a solid foundation in cooking techniques and traditional methods of cookery. Entrepreneurs also have to complete theoretical training which focuses on hygiene, food costing and business management skills for caterers.
Tiger Brands enabled two groups of entrepreneurs to train in Johannesburg, as well as a group in Durban and one in Cape Town. Johannesburg’s third group is training in the CCE kitchen at the South African Chefs Association at this very moment. At the graduation ceremony, held on June 2, 2011, the graduates received a knife set and certificate acknowledging their newly obtained qualification. Four graduates received special recognition as best student and got rewarded for their hard work and dedication to the programme.
Thank you to Tiger Brands, the IED, HTA, BEESA and lectures involved in the programme for their continued support and commitment to the upliftment and development of entry level catering entrepreneurs and promoting sustainable businesses in the culinary industry.
