The 2012 GOLDCREST Young Chef of the Year Competition is well under way, with many talented young chefs entering in to claim the prestigious title and win an all-expenses paid trip to the UK to cook under the tutelage of the amazing Heston Blumenthal.
The competition launched on 5 July 2012, inviting student chefs from the ages of 18 to 28 years to enter in and prepare a four-course tasting menu for 10 people using one or more GOLDCREST products per dish.
The competition theme for 2012 is The 5 Human Senses and with this new, exciting theme, the criteria have been made even more vigorous and challenging too.
Each dish needs to focus on one of the five human senses - sight, sound, touch, taste or smell - and to make the competition even more interesting, one of the four dishes prepared needs to have a focus on molecular gastronomy.
There has been a fantastic response to the competition, with many exciting young chefs sending in creative entries. Final entries will be accepted on 21 September 2012, so if you haven’t entered yet, we urge you to do so to avoid disappointment.
The esteemed judging panel will be going through all the entries and choosing the finalists on 25 and 26 September 2012 and the final cook-off will be held on 11 October 2012 at the Tsogo Sun Centre for Culinary Excellence & Vulcan Skills Kitchen followed by a fabulous gala event at the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism & Hospitality.
An exciting and prestigious competition, The 2012 GOLDCREST Young Chef of the Year winner can enjoy an all-expense paid trip to the UK for a week long culinary experience in one of Heston Blumenthal’s restaurants such as The Fat Duck in Bray, The Hinds Head in Bray and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hyde Park London.
Adding to this, the school who sends in the most entries in to the competition this year stands a chance to will a copy of The Big Fat Duck cookbook valued at R3,500.
Good luck to all the students that enter this year!
